V. Katkus: When negotiating with the British over Lithuania’s gold, it was three of us against thirteen of them

SUMMARY

Former First Deputy Foreign Minister Valdemaras Katkus recalls that during the negotiations surrounding German reunification — which also touched upon border issues — it was crucial for Lithuania not to be drawn into multilateral agreements. The Soviets attempted to do so, but both the United States and the United Kingdom informed Lithuania and helped prevent it. Lithuania wanted to resolve its border questions strictly through bilateral talks with its neighbors — and succeeded.
In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Katkus also described the return of Lithuania’s gold reserves and the negotiations with the United Kingdom and Sweden that ultimately brought the gold back to Lithuania.
