SUMMARY
Viktoras Baublys, the first Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Belarus, recalls repeatedly encountering attempts to appropriate the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and to portray its rulers as Belarusian. “At the exhibition Belarusian Heroes, my wife asked the organizers: if Vytautas, Mindaugas, Algirdas and other dukes are Belarusian heroes, why don’t you meet boys with those names on the streets of Minsk? No answer ever came,” he says.
In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Ambassador Baublys also discusses Aliaksandr Lukashenko’s conflict with foreign ambassadors over the forced relocation of their residences from the prestigious Drozdy district, as well as Lukashenko’s erratic swings between courting the West and aligning with the East.
