Energy security expert, diplomat, and former Vice Minister of Energy Romas Švedas says that Lithuania only truly woke up when it received a “kick in the backside” in the form of pressure from Russia. The need for energy independence became undeniable around 2007–2008, as the shutdown of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant approached. In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Švedas explained the political and economic pressure placed on all of Lithuania’s strategic energy projects. In his view, only consistent energy policy and the strong political will of that period made it possible to successfully implement most of these projects.
