SUMMARY
Ambassador Petras Vaitiekūnas recalls once asking a customs officer: “Do you know what makes a good customs officer? A good customs officer is someone who can create a queue out of nothing.” With this story, he illustrated who and why had an interest in keeping long lines at the Lithuanian–Latvian border. After Lithuania joined the European Union and border and customs controls were removed, he notes, “no apocalypse followed.”
In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Vaitiekūnas talked about the resistance to signing the treaty with Poland, the Maišiagala memorandum, relations with Latvia, the so-called curd-snack wars, and even an incident when his wife was forced off a regional bus at the Lithuanian–Latvian border.
