“A country of grim exoticism” — this is how Ambassador Petras Vaitiekūnas described Belarus when he arrived to take up his post. “Political opponents murdered in secret, a legitimately elected parliament dispersed by special forces dressed as ninjas — all of this can only be described as grim exoticism,” he says.
In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Ambassador Vaitiekūnas also questioned whether Belarus could ever truly be an independent state in the future, given its weak sense of national identity.
