“The economic situation in Belarus at the time was best illustrated by an episode in a Minsk restaurant, when President Algirdas Brazauskas, looking through the menu, asked me what those telephone numbers were doing instead of prices,” recalls Ambassador Jonas Paslauskas.
In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Ambassador Paslauskas joked that in summer Aliaksandr Lukashenko tended to be pro-Western, while in winter he became pro-Russian — when gas supplies were needed.
