SUMMARY
“Lithuania’s relations with Israel developed slowly after the restoration of independence. Many issues had to be addressed. When the Lithuanian state existed, the State of Israel did not yet exist; and when Israel was established, Lithuania no longer existed,” says Ambassador Alfonsas Eidintas, who served as Lithuania’s Ambassador to Israel.
In his view, the work of diplomats in building bilateral relations is like constructing a brick wall — you can never single out which ambassador laid which brick. He believes that some Lithuanian politicians at times lack historical understanding and sensitivity to past events, thereby damaging the relationships and mutual trust that diplomats have worked hard to build.
