SUMMARY
Ambassador Antanas Valionis — the first Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Poland — recalls learning spoken Polish in Warsaw while writing his dissertation, and later, as ambassador, being recognized by the Polish MFA protocol service as the best Polish-speaking foreign diplomat in the country.
In his conversation with Artūras Jonkus, Valionis discusses how Lithuania’s relations with Poland were built after the restoration of independence, as well as the close, informal ties that presidents Algirdas Brazauskas and Valdas Adamkus developed with Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski beyond official diplomatic protocol.
